Dr. Orr is a cultural anthropologist specializing in environmental knowledge, ethno-science and social theory. The fieldwork he has conducted in the Philippines, Indonesia and the United States encompasses the study of violence, phenomenology, religion and ecological knowledge. He completed his PhD at the University of Arizona, MA from UC-Berkeley and MA and BA from Yale. His recent work has been published in Human Ecology, The Annual Review of Anthropology and American Anthropologist. The National Science Foundation and the Ford Foundation have funded his research. Before coming to the University of Maryland, Dr. Orr has held academic positions in Canada, Australia and France.
His current project explores the relationship between the organic, mechanical and digital worlds as they relate to environmental tasks, ethics and knowledge. This work is taking place among communities in New England.
