WHO WAS WOODS?

Woods Hall has been the home of the Anthropology department since its formation in 1974. But do you know why Woods Hall is named Woods Hall? On Maryland Day, April 30, 2016, UMD Archivist Anne Turkos will come to the Anthropology Alumni Luncheon to tell the story of Albert F. Woods, UMD president 1917-1926, and the man after whom Woods Hall was named. Join fellow departmental faculty, staff and alumni for this luncheon presentation.

Anne S. K. Turkos is the University Archivist for the University of Maryland. Ms. Turkos works with College Park campus departments and units, student groups, and alumni to identify, transfer, preserve, and make available all permanent university records in a variety of formats. The University Archives is comprised of over 1,000 linear feet of campus publications, nearly 1 million photographs, approximately 3,000 memorabilia items, 20,000-30,000 pieces of film and videotape, and over one linear mile of documents, as well as archival copies of master’s theses and doctoral dissertations and personal papers of distinguished faculty. These materials form the core of the university’s heritage and memory and are heavily consulted by a wide variety of researchers who come from the campus community, the state of Maryland, across the United States, and around the world.
