Since about 2000, a great many archaeologists have taken seriously their ethical responsibilites to collaborate with descendant communities, demonstrating that collaboration can take many forms. However, collaboration is not a new phenomenon. Indeed, decades ago some archaeologists appreciated that collaboration can benefit both archaeologists and descendent communities. In this talk Michael Brian Schiffer will represent two examples of archaeologists who have engaged in earlier collaborations. The first is Richard Daugherty's Ozette Project and the Makah Indian Nation; the second is Thurstan Shaw and the emerging nation of Nigera.
