Please join the Black and Latino Education: History and Policy course on Monday, February 20, 2017 from 4:15 - 6:30pm in welcoming a dynamic speaker to campus in celebration of Black History Month.

Dr. Richard Benson, II is a Spelman College author, educational historian, and teacher educator who will lead us in an interactive discussion about African-American history and Malcolm X and the Radicalization of the Black Student Movement. 

An "Ask the Author Anything" dialogue will follow.  Light refreshments will be served!

In his book Fighting for Our Place in the Sun, Richard D. Benson II examines the life of Malcolm X as not only a radical political figure, but also as a teacher and mentor. His work illuminates the untold tenets of Malcolm X’s educational philosophy, and also traces a historical trajectory of 1960's Black activists who sought to create spaces of liberation and learning that are free from cultural and racial oppression.

Richard D. Benson II is an assistant professor in the Education Department at Spelman College in Atlanta, GA. A native of Chicago, Dr. Benson earned his Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies specializing in the history of education from the University of Illinois. He is currently completing a manuscript entitled Funding the Revolution: Black Power, White Church Money and the Financial Architects of Black Radicalism 1966-1976.
