Uncovering an African-American Neighborhood's Long, Rich History

Woods Hall

The area known as "The Hill" in Easton, Md. has long been an African-American neighborhood. But until recently, no one realized the depth of The Hill's roots. In the late 1700's, hundreds of free African Americans lived here, a seeming anomaly in an era when slavery was widespread in Talbot County. Now, local historians and a group of archaeologists from the University of Maryland are digging deeper into The Hill's history, and are asking whether this may be the oldest African-American community in the country. We visit The Hill and speak with the archaeologists who recently traveled there for the first of a series of excavations.
