Douglas VonStrohe is an alum of the CHRM program, having received his master's degree in 2023. His thesis is titled Investigation of Subsurface Features at 15TM35: The Bibb Escapes/Gatewood Plantation. VonStrohe's thesis seeks to locate the quarters for enslaved persons on the Gatewood Plantation in Trimble County, Kentucky. The site was recently added to the National Park Service's National Underground Network to Freedom for its historical association to Henry Bibbs, who became a prominent figure in the abolitionist movement in Canada following his escape from enslavement. Based on a thriving public archaeology program at the site since 2005, Doug's thesis addresses the need for more research in the archaeology of enslavement, beyond large plantations, at small farmsteads.
