Adriane Michaelis', Ph.D. alumna, published two articles from her research with Dr. Jen Shaffer. The first article was published in the Journal of Political Ecology and is titled “The practice of everyday oystering: aquaculture as resistance?” and the second article was published in Marine Policy, titled “Cultural ecosystem services enabled through work with shellfish.”
Adriane's research broke new ground in identifying a wide range of previously undocumented cultural ecosystem services associated with shellfish harvest, particularly oysters. Cultural benefits to peoples' identities, experiences, and capabilities offer a better understanding why people harvest wild shellfish and enter into bivalve shellfish aquaculture beyond standard ecosystem services, and can be useful in supporting coastal communities, their economies, and overall food security.
Congratulations Drs. Michaelis and Shaffer!
