Dr. Andrea Lopez published an article titled, “Necropolitics in the “Compassionate” City: Care/Brutality in San Francisco” in the journal Medical Anthropology. In this article, Dr. Lopez draws from long term ethnographic fieldwork with unstably housed and homeless women who use drugs to examine how compassion and brutality are intertwined in the provision of care for marginalized populations. She theorizes how violence is subtly, yet systematically deployed, so that care and compassion are co-articulated with a politics of death.
