The Zinn Education Project, which promotes and support the people’s history and honors the American historian Howard Zinn whose work focused on social justice issues, featured Dr. Paul Shackel’s essay “Why Don’t More Americans Remember the 1897 Massacre of Pennsylvania Coal Miners?” The essay, which was originally featured on Zocalo Public Square, discusses how the event is remembered and why it took nearly 75 years after the massacre to commemorate the 19 men killed at the Lattimer protest.
