Archaeologist digs at Adirondack lakeside retreat founded in 1903 for women working NY mills

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. — An archaeological dig is under way in an Adirondack lakeside women’s retreat.

The Wiawaka (wee-uh-WAH’-kuh) Holiday House on the eastern shore of Lake George was founded in 1903 to provide single women working at Albany-area textile mills a respite from their harsh working conditions. It still operates today as a holiday retreat primarily for women.

Megan Springate, a doctoral student at the University of Maryland, is leading an excavation this summer on the historic property, which includes structures dating back to the 1870s.

She says they hope the artifacts found during the digs will reveal more about the lives and activities of the women who spent summers at Wiawaka during its first four decades.
