From May 31st to July 8th UMD will excavate in Eckley Miners Village. This is a site of the Commission on History and Museum of Pennslyvania in Luzerne County. The site, which has been active for over 160 years, has the goal of preserving historical buildings and providing a better understanding of the lives of the anthracite miners and their families.
This will be the 5th year in which archaeologists, led by Paul Shackel, will work in the region. This summer, the focus will be placed on the homes of immigrants of that time in the community.
For information call the Community Center (570-861-8081) or send an email to Camille Westmont at the University of Maryland (vcw [at] umd [dot] edu)
The site will be open for the public to visit. For related information, visit www.eckleyminersvillage.com and the Facebook page.
