Sarah Ahmed graduated with her B.A. in spring of 2019, with a concentration in sociocultural anthropology and a minor in Nonprofit Leadership and Social Innovation. She is passionate about anthropology and international development and believes that the anthropological lens plays a crucial role in development practice and policy. Sarah has taken a wide array of courses in medical anthropology and global health and has also served as an Undergraduate Teaching Assistant for Dr. Andrea López. Aside from her academic experiences, her professional experiences have also cemented her passion for anthropology and development. As a junior, she worked as a Gender and Markets intern at the United Nations Foundation in Washington D.C. and is currently a Research Assistant at the Middle East Institute’s Center for Afghanistan-Pakistan studies. Additionally, she previously served as a Legislative Intern for Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary at the Maryland General Assembly. Her experiences with policy and anthropology defined her research interest in medical anthropology and global health, hypermarginality, neoliberal subjectivities and the anthropology of gender and masculinity. Upon graduation, Sarah plans to pursue a Master’s in anthropology and development in the United Kingdom. She has been accepted to institutions including: the London School of Economics; St. Andrews University of Scotland; the University of Sussex; Queen’s University, Belfast; and the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS). Sarah is a transfer student at the University of Maryland and is a recipient of the Frederick Douglass Scholarship. She previously attended Howard Community College (HCC) in Columbia, Maryland. Her personal background as a first-generation Pakistani woman, a Muslim and an immigrant have profoundly shaped her research interests and her interest in anthropological engagement and activism. Her other interests include South Asian studies, feminist anthropology and traveling (she previously studied abroad in Ireland with HCC!). You can find her on LinkedIn here.
