Ms. Carol J. Ellick is an applied anthropologist specializing in public outreach and education. She holds a B.A. in anthropology from The Evergreen State College (1981) and a M.A. in education, with a specialization in curriculum and instruction, from Chapman University (1992). Ms. Ellick is considered one of the leading experts in archaeological education and the development of public programs in the United States. She has created educational materials for third through twelfth grades, taught teachers’ workshops in Arizona, Colorado, and New Mexico, designed award-winning museum-quality displays, and worked within the professional archaeological community on the development of public outreach efforts. Her products and programs reflect the multiple voices of culture and cultural understanding by including scientific, archaeological, anthropological, and traditional cultural knowledge.  In 2010, to further her outreach efforts, she started a small consulting business, Archaeological and Cultural Education Consultants, with the goal of reaching a broader audience.

Ms. Ellick’s publications include articles in numerous professional journals and books such as the National Park Service’s publication, Common Ground, the Society for American Archaeology magazine, The SAA Archaeological Record, and the volume The Archaeology Education Handbook: Sharing the Past with Kids. Most recently, Ms. Ellick wrote (with Joe Watkins), The Anthropology Graduate’s Guide: From Student to a Career (Left Coast Press, 2011) and she is currently writing The Archaeologist’s Guide to Education and Public Outreach (Left Coast Press, publication date, March 2015).

Over the course of her 30+ year career, Ms. Ellick has worked primarily in Cultural Resources Management in for-profit firms, nonprofit organizations, and university settings. She held an adjunct teaching position in anthropology at the University of New Mexico and a part-time salaried position in Native American Studies at the University of Oklahoma. While in Oklahoma, she developed partner programs with the indigenous centers at the University of Wollongong in Australia and Hokkaido University, Japan.

Ms. Carol J. Ellick began her term as a Research Associate and Adjunct Instructor in the Anthropology Department at the University of Maryland-College Park in December, 2013. During the summer of 2014, Ms. Ellick taught the Anthropology Career Boot Camp and Internship Program.
