Alumna Profile: Allison Chang (BA 2009)

Allison Chang received her BA in Sociocultural Anthropology in 2009, and went on to Columbia University's Teachers College for an MA in Anthropology of Education. Her areas of focus included campus political strategy, educational economics, and non-school contexts for learning. Identifying education as a lifelong passion, Allison entered the high school world. She has been teaching a broad survey course in anthropology, and World Geography, since 2011. Her goal is to expose teenagers to key concepts of anthropology in order to foster cultural competence, awareness of cultural lenses & ethnocentrism, the ability to analyze one's own social interactions, and the skill of perceiving structural dynamics within and across societies. She enjoys animated class discussions about taboo topics, applying learned vocabulary to current events, and constantly realizing, through current events, that "facts and theories keep shifting" in the fossil record. Allison teaches humanities & social studies for grades 9-12 in the D.C. area. She is also an administrator.
