Alumni Profile: Jeremy Krones, BA'13

Jeremy D. Krones graduated with a BA in Socio-Cultural Anthropology in 2013 with a focus on ecological anthropology, a topic he continues to study. He discovered his interest in ecological anthropology in a class on anthropology in the military, when he questioned the effects of cultural development on governments. In response, his professors gave him a stack of books. The theories he found most interesting dealt with the influence of the natural world on the development of the civilizations and cultures, and how those communities utilized their natural resources.

Jeremy was heavily involved with community service at UMD, as a team leader with Terps For Change and as trail maintenance officer with the Terrapin Trail Club. He was also president of the Anthropology Student Association and represented ANTH on the BSOS Dean’s Student Advisory Council. In addition to helping with graduate projects, Jeremy also interned with the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, researching the use of natural remedies, specifically in Latin America.

Never a devoted academic, Jeremy moved after graduation to the Adirondacks to be a backcountry steward. When that term ended, he found his way to a holistic cattle ranch in northern Arizona. After a year working on the ranch, he transitioned to managing a collaborative conservation nonprofit in Flagstaff, AZ, called Diablo Trust. He was able to put his anthropological training to use in that position, as a community educator and mediator between the many voices surrounding public-land ranching.

After nearly four years with Diablo Trust, Jeremy wanted to see more of the West, and to explore another side of conservation. In September 2018 he moved to Grand County, CO (the western entrance to the Rocky Mountain National Park), to be program director of Colorado Headwaters Land Trust. In March 2019 he was promoted to Executive Director.
