Alumnus Profile: David Colón-Cabrera (MAA 2010, PhD 2015)

David Colón Cabrera is a graduate of the MAA (2010) and PhD (2015) programs in the Anthropology Department at the University of Maryland. As a cultural anthropologist, he has been drawn to applied and practicing environments by working in places such as the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) an the Institute for Reproductive Health at Georgetown University.

David hails from Puerto Rico and has always been interested in advocacy and activism for other people of color in the US, and underrepresented minorities in higher education (his picture was even used recently for an article on the topic of decolonizing science while ‘protesting’ the Melbourne, Australia March for Science). During his tenure at UMD, he was very active in advocacy and became President of the Graduate Student Government for two years, and was recognized with the University of Maryland Graduate Student Distinguished Service Award in 2014, and the University of Maryland Carolina Rojas-Bahr Award for Outstanding Latino Graduate Student in 2015.His dissertation research investigated how international research on male circumcision influenced local service-delivery in reproductive and sexual health clinics. The research focused on how community clinics in the state of Maryland, delivered prenatal care services including information on circumcision to a highly diverse and immigrant population.

He currently lives in Melbourne, Australia. He divides his time between being a Research Assistant and Teaching Associate at Monash University (previously also at the University of Melbourne) and as a newly hired Research Assistant at the Gender Clinic. The Gender Clinic provides services to Trans and gender diverse people and is part of Monash Health, the largest public health service in Victoria, Australia. As part of the clinic’s team, David will be conducting internal research related to quality and health services at the Gender Clinic.
