Dr. Judith Freidenberg Recognized for her Longstanding Commitment to Community Service

Earlier this year, Dr. Judith Freidenberg, Professor Emeritus, was awarded the Governor’s Volunteer Service Certificate in appreciation of her contribution to the citizens of Maryland.

Over the years, Dr. Freidenberg has contributed greatly to the UMD community and broad Prince George’s County. During her time at UMD, she established the Immigrant Life Course Research Program (ILCRP), which sought to establish effective partnerships between researchers, policy makers and community organizations to better understand the everyday lives of local Latin American immigrant populations.

More recently, Dr. Freidenberg was selected to receive the St. George’s Day Award from the Prince George’s County Historical Society in recognition of her publication, Contemporary Conversations on Immigration in the United States: The View from Prince George’s County. Each year the Prince George’s County Historical Society celebrates the county’s founding by recognizing individuals and groups that have made significant contributions the preservation of its heritage. 

Her service and commitment to community partnership and community-based experientiallearningexemplify the department’s commitment to applied anthropology. Congratulations, Dr. Freidenberg!
