Shirley Fiske awarded the Solon T. Kimball Award for Public and Practicing Anthropology

Dr. Shirley Fiske, Research Professor in the Department of Anthropology, has been awarded the American Anthropological Association's prestigious Solon T. Kimball Award for public and practicing anthropology. 

The Kimball Award honors exemplary anthropologists who have made outstanding contributions to the development of anthropology as an applied science, eventually leading to important impacts on public policy.

“It is deeply gratifying to be honored by my colleagues and peers,” Dr. Fiske said. “My work in environmental anthropology has focused on coastal communities and fishing families in the face of increasing economic and regulatory change, as well as on the development of robust programs and policies that address the human and cultural dimensions of climate change.”

Interim Chair of the department, Dr. Michael Paolisso, added, “[Shirley] is a most deserving candidate and it is great that she is being recognized for her many applied anthropology contributions."

Dr. Fiske recently chaired a national task force on anthropology and climate change and co-edited a book on forest carbon offsets, social equity, and environmental governance, The Carbon Fix: Forest Carbon, Social Justice and Environmental Governance.
