  • Welcome To The New Chair of Anthropology
Pavao-Zuckerman, Barnet

The Department of Anthropology welcomes Dr. Barnet Pavao-Zuckerman as the new Chair of Anthropology. We want to thank Dr. Paul Shackel for his 12 years of conscientious leadership, under his direction the department has grown immensely and we have seen an increase in the number of full-time faculty among many other remarkable achievements!

As Dr. Darryll J Pines, UMD’s new President, stated we are working through and against twin (interrelated) pandemics: Covid-19 and racial injustice. This is a raw and painful time but we must now push forward with the work we all know needs to be done. As anthropologists, we are uniquely positioned to help lead UMD’s response to both of these pandemics.

Our scholarship as anthropologists working in health, heritage, and the environment is critical to the initiatives and recommendations of President Pines. This work will be critical as we embark on our next round of strategic planning and assess who we are and where we want to go as a department. Our present is changing rapidly, but we must work together to solidify our common future.

We are excited to see Dr. Pavao-Zuckerman take on this new role and to see the Department grow and flourish under her leadership. It is a privilege to welcome Dr. Pavao-Zuckerman as the new Chair!
