Bio
A native Wisconsinite, Ms. Spiering received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin- La Crosse in Archaeological Studies in 2016. After graduation, she moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 2017 and worked primarily as a cultural resource technician across the Mid-Atlantic for GIA Consultants and SWCA Environmental Consultants until moving back to Wisconsin in 2019. For the next four years, she worked for several cultural resource management companies (ERM, Commonwealth Heritage Group, SWCA, Stantec, and SRI) as a part-time or contact technician or crew chief. Her longest contacted position took place outside of Mojave, CA for approximately 10 months from 2021 – 2022. Ms. Spiering currently lives in southeastern Wisconsin and remotely works as a Staff Archaeologist with SWCA Environmental Consultants Minneapolis, MN office. She has held this title since becoming a full-time employee in 2023.
She has worked on a multitude of projects including US Forest Service surveys, solar and wind energy projects, oil and gas pipelines, well pads, and valve station projects. Experience on these projects varies from pedestrian surveys, extensive shovel testing, full data recovery excavations, tribal resource surveys, and monitoring active construction. Although her most recent employment has been the most stable position, she continues to travel across the United States for fieldwork in the Midwest, Plains, Rocky Mountains, and Southwest regions. Ms. Spiering has worked in 27 states and assisted with 2 environmental survey projects. Across her many positions, she has gained extensive experience with Phase I, II, and III fieldwork, construction monitoring, report writing, and lab analysis practices.
Ms. Spiering’s intended focus for her work in the Cultural and Heritage Resource Management program and future career in the private sector is CRM and cooperation with Tribal stakeholders in Upper Midwest and Plains archaeology. At SWCA she frequently works alongside Tribal Cultural Specialists (TCSs) and THPO representatives while working on reservations in the Dakotas and while on private, state, and federal lands across the Great Plains and Upper Midwest.
